Where Do Ideas Come From?

We unfortunately took a week off from writing in this space.  There were some planned interruptions like our work to get a new site into open beta for start ups (More on this later) and some unplanned interruptions like the power supply blowing up on the computer.  All of these interruptions actually caused a small case of writer’s block.

So where do ideas come from?  For me they can come from many places.  Sometimes, it is a movie I watch, a book or article that I read, some old pictures that I am going through.  However to tell the truth most ideas come from conversations with other people.  They come from social interaction.

I will not discount the face to face interaction in generating ideas.  Just last week, I was having lunch with Stephanie and she was telling me about plans for an organization to help young women.  That conversation stuck with me all weekend and on Sunday, I emailed her what had popped inside my noggin.

One of the features that drives me to social media, is the chance to interact with many more people socially.  It opens up a world of ideas from music recommendations to links to interesting articles to an entrepreneur with a better mousetrap.

When you look at it from a marketer’s perspective.  How many great ideas for better ways to promote your product, develop a new one, etc. can you get from your community.  Many companies have a continuous improvement policy and/or customer satisfaction program.  With social media, all you have to do is ask, listen, and find ways to interact.

Later this week UniversalWit will launch in partnership with Political Technology the My Start Up Site.  This new platform is an open beta for start ups.  Sign up is free and you get a blog plus a couple pages to showcase your ideas.  We believe having start ups interact will improve their chance at success and stimulate this economy.  Your feedback on how we can improve our beta is welcomed as well.  An official announcement twill come later this week when the Open Beta is available for your use.

We hope that you will spread the word for us to all those with a business idea.  After all ideas come from you and me and everyone else that we interact with.
